The daily newspaper, Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes, is owned by French press baron Robert Hersant, proprietor of the Paris daily Le Figaro.
The largest TV broadcaster is the government-owned Réseau France Outremer. A private television station, Canal+, operates on a subscription basis with an encrypted signal.
RFO-Radio broadcasts in French from Nouméa. There's also a 24-hour, youth-oriented music station called Nouméa Radio Joker or NRJ at FM 93.5 MHz which doesn't present news. There's no English broadcasting in New Caledonia.
